LSU Chemistry Welcomes New Chair
The LSU Department of Chemistry is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor John Pojman as the new departmental chair. Let us thank Dr. Michael Cherry who has served as chair since July 2018 as he returns as a member of the physics faculty.
“I look forward to applying my skills, vision, and enthusiasm to further the level of research excellence, ensure the implementation of a STEM-driven curriculum, and add to the prestige of the Department of Chemistry at Louisiana State University,” said Professor Pojman.
Dr. Pojman received his B.S. in chemistry from Georgetown University, earned his Ph.D. in chemical physics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1988, and completed postdoctoral training at Brandeis University. In 1990, Dr. Pojman was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Southern Mississippi.
As a professor at the University of Southern Mississippi, Dr. Pojman received the USM Innovation Award for Basic Research (2005) and was named “Chemist of the Year” by the Mississippi Section of the American Chemical Society (2006). After years of accomplishment in research, teaching, and service, Dr. Pojman was appointed associate professor in 1994 and professor in 1997. In 2008, Dr. Pojman joined the LSU Chemistry faculty as Professor of Macromolecular Sciences.
During his time at LSU Chemistry, Professor Pojman has received numerous awards for his teaching and research, including the LSU Alumni Association Faculty Excellence Award (2017). Since 1990, he has over 299 scientific presentations, 167 peer-reviewed articles, and 15 book chapters. He also served as Director of Graduate Studies for two terms (2009 – 2012; 2017 -2019). Dr. Pojman is a scientist and educator and has maintained a successful research and mentoring program for the past 30 years. Not only maintaining a lab with graduate students, Dr. Pojman is passionate about providing research opportunities to undergraduates. Since 1990, over 150 undergraduates have worked with him.
Professor Pojman is also President of Pojman Polymer Products, LLC, which he affectionately calls 3P (He likes to say he is the 3PCEO). His company has licensed several products with worldwide distribution for artists. Based on his work with frontal polymerization, the products allow “cure-on demand.”
Dr. Pojman’s research interests include frontal polymerization, nonlinear phenomena in polymeric systems, cure-on demand polymerization, and the materials of art. Dr. Pojman is also known for his “World’s Largest Pocket Protector Webseum” and interest in the three-toed amphiuma, which he proudly keeps as pets in his office.
