Chemistry Instructor Received University Distinguished Faculty Awards

Dr. Cook portraitLSU Chemistry Senior Instructor Elzbieta Cook received the Tiger Athletic Foundation Outstanding Instructor Award for 2020. This award recognizes teaching excellence and outstanding service among instructors, who play a critical role in LSU’s educational mission and have a special direct impact on student success. Dr. Elzbieta Cook also received the George H. Deer Distinguished Teaching Award from the University College. The George H. Deer Distinguished Teaching Award recognizes faculty with a record of excellence in teaching at the freshman level at LSU.

According to a biological engineering freshman Lauren Hynson, “Dr. Cook wants her students to learn chemistry, rather than just pass the class. She also strives to connect with us. Before class, she can often be seen chatting one-on-one with a student... If you visit her during office hours, she can almost always recall your name and face.”

“She is a strong advocate of the instructors and education efforts of the department.…She is a true asset to the chemistry department, College of Science, LSU and to the thousands of students she has taught,” shared Dr. Linda Allen, Director of Undergraduate Laboratories and Senior Instructor.

“We are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Elizabeth Cook working in our department.  She works tirelessly to help our students master chemistry, and this award is a well-earned acknowledgement of her efforts," added Chemistry Chair and Professor John Pojman.

Dr. Cook received her Ph.D. from the University of Calgary in 1993 and joined the LSU Chemistry faculty in 2002.  When Dr. Cook is not in the classroom teaching and meeting with students, she explores innovative lecture delivery systems and actively conducts research on metacognitive learning strategies and self-efficacy.

Among Dr. Cook’s many accomplishments, she has received numerous awards recognizing her teaching: Outstanding Instructor Award from the LSU Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society (2017), ACS DivCHED travel award (2016), LSU Teaching Enhancement Fund travel award (2016), Tiger Athletic Foundation UCFY Undergraduate Teaching Award (2015), LSU Teaching Enhancement Grant (2010), Tiger Athletic Foundation Undergraduate Teaching Award (2010), Tiger Athletic Foundation Undergraduate Teaching Award (2008).
