Graduate Student Awards
A major function of the Department is the education of graduate majors for a successful career in biology. We honor the best of our students with a number of awards in order to assist them with costs of preparation for their career. Many of the past winners of our graduate awards have established successful professional careers after graduate school. Your tax deductible contribution to the following Awards will enhance the Department’s ability to assist our graduate students in establishing outstanding credentials for a career in the Biological Sciences.
Awards for Excellence in Teaching
William H. Gates Award for Excellence in Freshman Instruction - Given annually to a teaching assistant for outstanding instruction in freshman biology laboratories for majors. (award winners)
Freshman Biology Non-majors Teaching Assistant Award - Given annually to a teaching assistant in the biological sciences for outstanding instruction in freshman biology laboratories for non-majors. (award winners)
Daisy B. and William J. Luke Botany Teaching Assistant Award - Given annually to a teaching assistant in the plant biology program for outstanding instruction. (award winners)
Simon Chang / Ezzat Younathan Outstanding Biochemistry Teaching Assistant Award - Given annually to a teaching assistant in the biochemistry program for outstanding instruction. (award winners)
Awards for Excellence in Research
Robert Scott and Louise Pierce Allen Scholarship for Biochemistry -Given Annually to a biochemistry graduate student for significant achievements in research. (award winners)
C. W. Edgerton Honor Award - Given annually to a plant biology graduate student for significant achievements in research. (award winners)
T. Vinton Holmes Award - Given annually to support student research in the field of ornithology. The Holmes Award is a research grant rather than an achievement award. (award winners)
Mary Lou Applewhite and Ron and Mary Neal Superior Graduate Student Scholarships – Awarded annually, these fund a one-semester fellowship plus an enhancement for an additional semester.
Carrie Lynn Yoder Superior Graduate Student Scholarship:"- David and Lynda Yoder established this endowment in loving memory of their daughter, Carrie Lynn Yoder. Carrie was working on her dissertation at Louisiana State University when she tragically died in 2003. The fellowship goes to a deserving graduate student in the biological sciences with preference given to students focusing on coastal ecology.(award winners)
C.R. Komma Memorial Outstanding International Graduate Student Award - The C. R. Komma Memorial Outstanding Graduate Student Award commerates Chandrasekhar Reddy Komma, an international student who died in 2007. The award is given annually to an outstanding international Ph.D. graduate student in the Department of Biological Sciences. The recipient of the Komma Award is to be selected on the basis of excellence in teaching and research. The award was established by Komma's fellow students and friends. (award winners)
Awards for Travel to Professional Meetings
McDaniel Travel Award - The McDaniel Travel Award is a competitive award that memoralizes Michael McDaniel, a promising graduate student who died tragically in the second year of his PhD program. Established by his family and given semi-annually the award funds travel expenses for graduate students to attend national or international meetings in the Biological Sciences and to present a paper or poster on the graduate research of the students. Thomas and Susan Shirley Superior Graduate Scholarship - Provides funding for experimental opportunities for department of biological sciences graduate students to travel fro conferences, research or field experiences. The scholarship shall be awarded to full-time graduate students enrolled in the College snf pursuins a graduate degree wwho demonstrate high academic and research achievements.
