First-year Students - Room & Roommate Selection | LSU Residential Life

How To Do First-year Housing

First-year students are expected to live on campus so every student can benefit from the advantages of the on-campus experience - higher GPAs, retention and graduation rates, and more opportunities to become part of the LSU community.

Join the next class of Tigers by submitting your LSU enrollment deposit.

Once that's done, you'll see your log in information for myLSU.

Go to myLSU and enter your myLSU username from your Admissions portal. Select "forgot password" to set up your first myLSU password.

It takes about 48 hours for the housing portal inside myLSU to get all your information from LSU Admissions.

So until you can log in to the housing portal in myLSU, research where you'd like to live on campus because that's one of the first questions on the housing application.

You won't need to enter an exact building name, like Miller Hall or Azalea Hall, but you will tell us if you prefer to live in a traditional residence hall or in a living-learning experience in one of our residential colleges.

You can always update your housing preference later if you need to.

On the left side menu in myLSU, navigate to Student Services>On-campus Housing to complete one of two processes:

  1. Submit the housing application, agree to the academic-year housing contract, and submit the $75 non-refundable contract fee, or
  2. Request an exemption to LSU's first-year student live-on requirement

Review the full details of the academic-year contract and contract cancellation penalties before you complete this step!

Roommate Finder inside the housing portal is like online dating for roommates. You can complete a questionnaire about your personality and preferences, and the system will give you a list of suggested roommates.

It's up to you if you participate in this service or not. We don't use this information to match you with roommates.

You can also search for particular people if you know who you'd like to room with.

If you find people you'd like to live with, you all will form a roommate group. Only the people listed in your roommate group will show as potential roommates and suite mates when it's time to select your room.

Remember, this is just who you prefer to live with; it's not a guarantee you will all be together, but we'll do our best!

This is the fun part - selecting your LSU room!

Based on when you completed the housing contract, you are assigned a room selection time slot. This time slot is the first time you can log in to the myLSU housing portal to select your LSU home.

View your room selection time slot on the "My Details" tab in the housing portal in late April.

Compare your time slot with members of your roommate group. See who has the earliest time slot, and make that person the group leader so they can select your room or suite as early as possible, if you want a particular building or room.

Email our team at if you need to change your housing preference or change what room you selected.

If you don't get into your top choices of buildings, you can tell us what building(s) you would prefer to live in on the housing wait list starting July 1, 2021. We will use this information to move you into a preferred space throughout the summer. There is no guarantee you’ll end up in your top choices, but we will do our best!

View the most up to date information about your room, roommates, room selection time slot, and wait lists on the "My Details" tab in the housing portal.

If you change your mind about your preferences, email us so we can remove you from the wait list or adjust your building preferences.

To cancel your on-campus housing contract, review the cancellation schedule and complete the request form.

Any penalty associated with cancellation will go by the date and time this cancellation form is submitted and will be administered through your university student account.

Pack your bags and hit the road!  It's time to be LSU bound!  Get details on selecting your arrival appointment time, packing just enough and not too much, and getting to campus at

Availability of Rooms - Updated June 14, 2021 at 2:45 p.m CST.

This information is approximate and changes constantly as students select rooms.

If a residential college building did not fill to capacity, the available spaces will show as options to select during traditional room selection.

If you don't get your preferred buildings during room selection, you can join its wait list starting July 1.
