Upward Bound Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in becoming an Upward Bound Instructor! Staff members in these roles bear a sizeable responsibility for the welfare of student participants and are vital to their success.

Our Philosophy

The purpose of the Upward Bound Program is to generate the academic skills and motivation that will enable each participant to complete a secondary educational program and subsequently enroll in and complete a post-secondary degree.

We believe that the primary responsibility of the Upward Bound Program is to provide successful learning experiences designed to meet the individual academic, cultural, social and vocational needs of each participant within an atmosphere that allows intellectual, physical and emotional development.

We believe in and strive to provide worthwhile activities, which will challenge each participant to achieve his/her fullest potential.

Our Program

Upward Bound is a program that provides opportunity through education and has been around since 1964.  Upward Bound is an early intervention program that effectively assists students in grades 9-12 who have “college potential” but often do not recognize or understand their academic and career options beyond high school.  Upward Bound identifies, recruits, and helps first-generation youth with financial need prepare for higher education.  The program’s objective is to holistically motivate and provide students with the comprehensive skillset needed to obtain a college degree.

The LSU Upward Bound (LSU-UB) program is housed in the Office of Strategic Initiatives (OSI), a national innovator in STEM education, research and mentoring programs.  Students in LSU-UB Programs receive intensive, engaging academic instruction on the LSU campus and hands-on experience in academic areas.

Students receive academic services throughout the academic year, mostly on Saturdays.  During those Saturdays,  the primary academic service offered is Supplemental Instruction to  further enhance the understanding of the concepts learned in school.  Saturday classes operate from 9am – 1pm on LSU’s campus.
