Faculty and Staff: Make Up Days

Updated: October 20, 2021

Dear Faculty and Staff,

Because classes have been cancelled this week, we must hold make-up days to ensure that the fall semester meets the minimum number of required class days. The make-up days will be September 25, October 9, 21, 22, and 30. Please read carefully below about which classes will be made up on which days:

  • Saturday, September 25, will be the make-up day for Monday, August 30.
  • Saturday, October 9, will be the make-up day for Tuesday, August 31.
  • Saturday, October 30, will be the make-up day for Wednesday, September 1.
  • Thursday, October 21, will be the make-up for Thursday, September 2. This date will be a virtual make-up class, meaning that no students are to attend in-person. Faculty that choose to provide instruction on this day should plan to do so via zoom or other remote teaching platforms.
  • Friday, October 22, will be the make-up for Friday, September 3.  This date will be a virtual make-up class, meaning that no students are to attend in-person. Faculty that choose to provide instruction on this day should plan to do so via zoom or other remote teaching platforms.
  • Last day to drop without a W is moved to 9/8/2021.
  • Last day to add is moved to 9/9/2021.

The changes listed in this message do not apply to students at the Paul M. Hebert Law Center, the School of Veterinary Medicine and the LSU Online program, which all operate on separate academic calendars. Those entities will contact their students directly about any make-up classes.

Students who have unavoidable conflicts on these make-up days should contact their professors as soon as possible. Professors may require documentation for missing the make-up days, and students who need guidance on getting appropriate documentation should contact Student Advocacy and Accountability.

This information has also been communicated to students via email and LSU social media.

Additional guidance for faculty:

  • Students should not be held accountable for any assignments that were due during the closure period.
  • As course assignment deadlines are revised, faculty should consider that much of the region remains without power, residential damage is widespread, and many of our more vulnerable students will need additional time to make up missed work. Please exercise compassion and leniency for those students who were either personally impacted or who had immediate family impacted by the storm.
  • In the two weeks subsequent to the campus re-opening, in-person classes should still be conducted and faculty are strongly encouraged to utilize technology available in LSU classrooms to provide synchronous livestreaming and record their planned course activities to facilitate what will likely be an uneven return to campus as community recovery progresses. Technical support is available here: Grok Article - Multimedia Classrooms: LSU Overview.
  • Instructional faculty are encouraged to be flexible regarding student absences on make-up days. If a student indicates they cannot attend the make-up class due to a reasonable circumstance such as standing work commitments, previously planned travel obligations, or existing University obligations such as athletic events, faculty may request documentation in order to confirm the conflict and can develop contingency plans for students needing to make up missed work that took place in the class meeting.
  • Campus teaching spaces are being surveyed. In the event that any classrooms are no longer useable, Facility Services will work with the Office of the University Registrar to find another space. Faculty will be contacted as soon as possible if that is the case.
  • If students contact faculty and appear to be in distress, faculty should direct them to the LSU CARES team.
