LSU Launches Micro-Credential Programs Online
10/17/2019
BATON ROUGE – In addition to the new undergraduate and graduate online degree programs, LSU added micro-credentials, or MicroCreds, to its portfolio of offerings. MicroCreds are designed for individuals who want to gain a new set of skills to immediately apply in the workplace. Each course is fully online and some can be completed as quickly as four weeks.

Each program is made up of a series of two to five related courses on a specific topic.
Successful completion earns the student a digital badge that can be shared online
on platforms like LinkedIn. Badges are distributed through Acclaim by Credly. Additionally,
LSU Online offers MicroCreds with credit that can be applied toward a degree.
“Our MicroCreds provide working professionals with a high-quality learning experience
in a convenient format online,” said Sasha Thackaberry, vice president of LSU Digital
and Continuing Education. “We are forging a new path that focuses on continually expanding
the opportunities for mid-career professionals and non-traditional students to accelerate
their career progression or assist in changing career paths.”
Current MicroCreds offerings are in the career focus areas of business, education,
human services and social work, liberal arts and humanities, engineering and construction,
and technology and data analytics. The launch of the Introduction to Construction
Management MicroCred creates a “fully stackable” program where students can take everything
from short course MicroCreds all the way up to graduate degrees with no credit wasted.
“Our introduction to construction management MicroCred has been organized for those
with or without a college degree who would like to see an overview of the profession
along with an understanding of construction materials and methods and how these relate
to reading a set of construction drawings,” said Charles Berryman, professor and chair
of the Bert S. Turner Department of Construction Management. “It’s a great option
for individuals who may not be ready to pursue a full baccalaureate degree and it
also provides a pathway towards a degree in construction management.”
