Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards to Deliver the Keynote Address at May Commencement

John Bel EdwardsBATON ROUGE – Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards will deliver the keynote address at LSU’s 292nd commencement ceremony on Friday, May 12, in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

“We are pleased to welcome Gov. Edwards to campus to speak to our May graduates,” said LSU President F. King Alexander. “Gov. Edwards has a long history of service to Louisiana, and we look forward to hearing the message he delivers to our graduates as they embark on the next stage of their lives.”

The ceremony will begin with the academic procession beginning at 7:45 a.m. and the main ceremony will follow at 8 a.m. During the ceremony, doctoral candidates will receive their diplomas individually, and degrees will be conferred for all students. There will be open admission to the main ceremony.

Diploma ceremonies will follow, at various locations across campus. During the diploma ceremonies, each graduate’s name will be called, and diplomas will be handed out individually on stage.

On Jan. 11, 2016, Edwards was sworn in as the 56th governor of Louisiana. The governor grew up in Amite, La., as one of eight children. With four Tangipahoa Parish Sheriffs in his lineage, he learned the importance of public service at an early age.

Edwards is a 1988 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. After graduating from West Point, the governor served eight years as an Airborne Ranger on active duty with the United States Army and commanded a rifle company in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C. He went on to graduate Order of the Coif from the LSU Law Center and set up a civil law practice in his home town of Amite.

In 2008, he was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives from District 72, where he served for eight years until the voters of Louisiana elected him governor in November 2015.

Edwards and his wife, First Lady Donna Edwards, have three children: Samantha Bel, Sarah Ellen and John Miller.
