BATON ROUGE – Innovation, experimentation and collaboration are at the heart of the annual Global Game Jam being hosted by LSU for the second time from Jan. 23-25. The Global Game Jam is a worldwide video game design weekend event spanning 488 locations across 72 countries. Artists, programmers and game-lovers all over the globe will have a chance to showcase their skills and passion for the world of gaming.

Amateurs and professionals alike will gather on Jan. 23 in the Digital Media Center, located at the LSU Center for Computation and Technology building, to kick off the 48-hour video game design event. Competitors from around the world will simultaneously begin the whirlwind process of programming, designing and writing a video game in the spirit of bringing people from all walks of life together.

Registration is open until Jan. 22 and costs $25 per person. Those interested can register online at, identifying Louisiana State University as the location where they will participate. The registration fee includes breakfast and dinners along with a midnight snack. Every user must fill out an online profile. After registering on the Global Game Jam website, participants will be contacted by LSU for payment. Organizers strongly recommend bringing a laptop to the event with the software participants think they will need.

On Friday, leading game developers will speak to contestants, and the secret theme of the competition will be announced. Participants will then pitch their ideas and team up with others to create an original game idea based on this year’s theme. Games must be submitted by 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25. A free presentation of the new video games will be open to the public on Sunday at 4 p.m., and awards will be given at 4:30 p.m.

Organizers are looking for volunteers to help with the event. Volunteers who serve five hours or more will receive complimentary registration.
