LSU Hilltop Arboretum to Host PlantFest Oct. 4-5, Special Pre-Sale Teaser Event Sept. 28

08/13/2014 12:35 PM

BATON ROUGE – LSU Hilltop Arboretum will hold its 31st annual “PlantFest” on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 5, from noon – 4 p.m. at the LSU Hilltop Arboretum, 11855 Highland Road.

The 31st anniversary of Hilltop’s fall plant sale celebrates three decades of masterfully collecting people and plants and bringing them together in the unique natural space that is the arboretum. The festival will include trees, shrubs, perennials, vines, ferns, fruits, gingers, camellias, incredible edibles, ornamental grasses and more that run the gamut from native and traditional to eclectic and electric newcomers. To spice up the mix, plants are imported from a diversity of nurseries located in Louisiana, as well as from Alabama, Texas and Florida. More than 5,000 plants will be assembled representing 600 different species, with some making their debut at Hilltop this year.

In honor of Hilltop’s former site director Marion Drummond, who served from 1992-2002 and continued to serve as a volunteer until her death in 2013, Hilltop's Hodge Podge Volunteers will feature plants grown by Drummond in her garden to augment the plant offerings for plant aficionados. Landscape architects, contractors and designers, arborists, horticultural specialists, growers, plants men and women and master gardeners will all will be on hand to help with plant selections. Plant display vignettes that dazzle with color, or speak to those who want to go native or attract butterflies will help get visitors growing and suggest just the right plant for their space.

The Hilltop Gift Shop will be joined by specialty plant and craft vendors to meet all the needs of gardeners and their gardens. Hilltop offers both a tax and a membership incentive that add up to 20 percent in savings on plants purchased during the two days of the sale.

One week prior to the sale, those looking to attend PlantFest can check Hilltop’s website,, for a list of the plants being offered at the 2014 PlantFest.

Before PlantFest, Hilltop will also hold an annual pre-sale teaser event on Sunday, Sept. 28, from 1-4 p.m. at the arboretum’s new education facility. Registration will take place beginning at 12:30 p.m., with a program from 1-4 p.m. Admission is $10 for Hilltop Arboretum members and $15 for non-members.

The event, titled “Marion Drummond Remembered,” will feature a talk about her favorite plants for the home garden by a few of her favorite friends – landscape architects and horticultural experts Johnny Mayronne and Michael Hopping – and her daughter, Laurie Drummond.

After the program, the guest speakers will lead a walk about through more than 5,000 plants that will already be set up for PlantFest the following weekend.
