LSU Fashion Design, Merchandising Programs Ranked by

BATON ROUGE – The fashion design and fashion merchandising programs within the Department of Textiles, Apparel Design and Merchandising, or TAM, of the LSU College of Agriculture were recently ranked among the best in the nation this year by


Nationally, LSU’s fashion merchandising program was ranked No. 31, while its fashion design program was ranked No. 38.


Meanwhile, LSU’s fashion design program also ranked No. 5 among schools in the ranking’s Southern region, and its fashion merchandising program ranked No. 6.


The rankings for the South include schools in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia researches fashion careers, schools and trends to help students connect with resources to build an exciting career in the fashion industry.


“This is very exciting news,” said Assistant Professor Lisa Barona McRoberts. “We have worked hard to spread the word about the best kept secret in the College of Agriculture – that our Textiles, Apparel Design and Merchandising program is one of the strongest in both the south and the country.”


“All fashion students (at LSU) will complete an internship at a local company or retailers in New York or Los Angeles,” an article accompanying the rankings reads. “Study Abroad experiences are available as well. Students have their pick of unique destinations such as Ecuador, China, Germany, Ireland, Spain and many others. Upon completion of the fashion program, the internship, and an optional study abroad experience, students will be prepared to work with textile and apparel manufacturers, retailers, media firms, testing laboratories or government agencies. Many graduates go on to launch their own lines or open their own studios or boutiques.”


According to Interim Department Head and Professor Jenna Kuttruff, TAM has recently hired three additional tenure-track assistant professors, two in apparel design and one in merchandising. TAM has also acquired new industry-specific computer software and hardware that is incorporated into students’ coursework. A new 3-D body scanner will be used for design and research.  


“We look forward to continued growth for this newly independent department at LSU and we expect to climb even higher in the national rankings,” she said.


TAM offers bachelors, masters and Ph.D. degrees with concentrations in textile science, apparel design and merchandising, and master’s and doctoral degrees in historic/cultural textiles and apparel. Both thesis and non-thesis options are offered at the master’s level.
