BATON ROUGE – LSU’s flagship campus 2014 graduating class is shaping up to be a record-breaker.

This class is projected to be the largest in the university’s history with about 6,367 students receiving degrees, coming ahead of 2012’s 6,251 graduates.

This year’s graduating class also represents the largest number of African-American, Hispanic and female students to receive degrees in the university’s history.

The class of 2014 includes 570 African-American students, up from the previous high of 516 in the class of 2013, reflecting a 10.5 percent increase.

“It’s outstanding that 50 years after the defeat of segregation at LSU, we can announce the largest graduating class of African American students in our history,” said LSU President and Chancellor F. King Alexander. “This year also saw our highest enrollment of African-American students ever. Additionally, in our most recent graduation rate report, LSU’s African-American graduation rates reached the highest level in our history – 60 percent, nearly double the national average.”

The class also includes 240 Hispanic students, up from the previous high of 218 in the class of 2012, reflecting a 10.1 percent increase.

Finally, the class has 3,421 female graduates, up from the previous high of 3,305 in the class of 2012, reflecting a 3.5 percent increase.

“LSU’s Class of 2014 is remarkable. In a time when having a college degree has never been more important to an individual’s future, these young men and women have achieved their dream of higher education in record-setting numbers,” said Alexander. “We couldn’t be more proud to count them among our LSU alumni.”
