BATON ROUGE – Kitchens on the Geaux at LSU, an organization of LSU Campus Life, will mark National Hunger and Homelessness Week on campus and in the Baton Rouge community Nov. 16-22. The group plans a plastic fork installation on the LSU Parade Ground, as well as more than a dozen volunteer opportunities open for students throughout the week.
The week begins with a service project on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Raven’s Outreach Center for Homeless Veterans, 1913 North Street., where about 200 LSU student volunteers are expected. During this project, LSU will join the Mid City Redevelopment Alliance to make facility improvements to Raven’s Outreach Center.
Other projects include preparing breakfast for homeless and hungry populations in Expressway Park, helping the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank move facilities, walking hungry families through the Shepherd’s Market Food Pantry, working with in-need senior citizens at Delmont Service Center and celebrating the second anniversary of the Capital Area Alliance for the Homeless’ One Stop Center.
Beginning Monday, Nov. 18, LSU students, faculty, staff and the Baton Rouge community are invited to view an installation of 12,500 plastic forks on the LSU Parade Ground representing the number of homeless people in Louisiana. The installation will be displayed on the Parade Ground through Tuesday, Nov. 19.
Each year, one week before Thanksgiving, the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness co-sponsor National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. During this week, a number of schools, communities and cities take part in a nationwide effort to bring greater awareness to the problems of hunger and homelessness.
Kitchens on the Geaux at LSU was chartered by a group of students who witnessed food being wasted in the community, and vowed to help educate fellow students and community members as well as to work to salvage and collect food for the hungry.
