BATON ROUGE – Wednesday’s special meeting of the LSU Board of Supervisors featured the appointment of F. King Alexander as President of the LSU System and Chancellor of LSU, with the understanding that the two positions combined under the title of President of LSU upon compliance with accreditation standards.

Alexander, currently serving as President of Cal State University Long Beach, was recommended by the board’s presidential search committee on March 18.

Additionally, the board approved two items related to the university’s hospital system. First was an amendment to the cooperative endeavor agreement among the board, Our Lady of the Lake Hospital Inc., the state of Louisiana through the Division of Administration and the Louisiana Department of Health & Hospitals. This amendment provides for the adjustment of the timetable to April 2013 for Our Lady of the Lake to assume inpatient services of Earl K. Long Medical Center in Baton Rouge and includes the agreement for the operation of outpatient clinics.

The board also approved a memorandum of understanding by and among the board, the Louisiana Department of Health & Hospitals, the Division of Administration and the Biomedical Research Foundation of Northwest Louisiana for the management and operation of the hospital facilities and associated clinics known as LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport and E.A. Conway Medical Center in Monroe.

Dr. Hugh Mighty, vice chancellor for clinical affairs and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the LSU Health Sciences Center-Shreveport, explained to the board that the agreement will help to reduce any disruption of the educational mission of the Health Sciences Center or hospital operations, provide a blueprint for a transition to a more efficient organizational structure, and allow the hospital to continue to build partnerships with other community hospitals and health care facilities.

“We believe this is the best way for us to move forward,” Mighty said.

The board will hold its next meeting on Friday, April 26.
