BATON ROUGE – More than 300 middle and high school students participated in the 2013
Region VII Louisiana Science and Engineering Fair, held at LSU. Students filled the
LSU Student Union Royal Cotillion Ballroom with their projects on Feb. 19-20 hoping
to earn ribbons, special awards and international nominations.
The overall winners in the senior division, grades 9-12, were Marianne Konikoff and
the team of Grace Ragland and Anna Claire Maxwell. Konikoff was awarded first place
for her project, “Molecular Hydrogen and Far-Ultraviolet extinction Due to Dust: A
Two-Year Study.” Ragland and Maxwell placed second for their project, “The Acclimation
of Spartina alterniflora to Various Saline Concentrations: A Continuation.” Konikoff,
Ragland and Maxwell are all students at St. Joseph’s Academy in Baton Rouge. They
will also represent Region VII in Phoenix, May 12-17, for Intel International Science
and Engineering Fair.
Overall winners in the junior division, grades 6-8, were Chi Cao and Anusha Zaman.
Cao won first place for her computer science project, “Home for Hubs,” and Zaman won
second for her project, “Betel Leaf and Tobacco Effects on Human Broncho-epithelial
(BEAS-2B) Cells.” Both Cao and Zaman attend Glasgow Middle School.
St. Joseph’s Academy earned the top school award for the senior division and Glasgow
Middle School earned the top school award for the junior division. Top school awards
were given to schools with the highest cumulative project scores.
The Region VII Science and Engineering Fair consisted of students from middle and
high schools in seven parishes including East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, Ascension,
Iberville, Pointe Coupee, East Feliciana and West Feliciana.
Several top winners in junior and senior division from the Region VII fair will compete
in the Louisiana State Science and Engineering Fair, which will be held March 26-27

The Region VII Science and Engineering Fair was sponsored by the Gulf South Rotating
Machinery Symposium, College of Science, College of Engineering, LSMS Physician Services
and Baton Rouge Bone and Joint Clinic.
