LSU Transition Advisory Team Student Experience Sub-Committee Holds Kickoff Meeting

BATON ROUGE – The Student Experience Sub-Committee of LSU’s Transition Advisory Team held its kickoff meeting Tuesday, Feb. 19, in the Lod Cook Alumni Center at LSU.


The 12-member sub-committee, co-chaired by Carroll Suggs and Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré, is composed of LSU students, alumni, administrators, academics, and administrative and business leaders.

Directly addressing the five students on the sub-committee in attendance at the meeting, Honoré said, “We are asked you to participate in this process to makes LSU stronger and more competitive because we know you are part of the solution.”

Suggs stressed the need for communication and trust throughout the process.

Christel Slaughter of SSA Consultants in Baton Rouge, who serves as the facilitator for the Transition Advisory Team and sub-committee meetings, charged members to focus on areas such as competing for top students within and outside the state; access and opportunities for students; support for student success to improve graduation rates; and service-learning.

Commenting on the sub-committees’ charter, Lisa Johnson, president/CEO, Bossier Chamber of Commerce, encouraged her fellow sub-committee members to focus on collaboration and synergy in order to move the LSU System forward.

“While the needs for the Baton Rouge, Shreveport and Eunice campuses are different, the academic and learning experience can be unified if we have a shared vision,” Johnson said. “Regardless of the mascot that represents them, we need all students to feel like they belong to LSU.”

Sub-committee member Judy Daniels, vice chancellor of student affairs and enrollment services at LSU-Eunice, agreed with Johnson, and said, “All of the system schools need to become unified. LSU-E works hard to impress upon students, ‘You are a LSU student, the expectations and standards are high across all campuses, and your success is paramount to us, as a system.’”

Student members focused on the value of the LSU diploma and their concerns that tight budgets and subsequent decisions might affect the quality of the learning experience and ultimately impact the LSU brand.

Over the next few weeks, the sub-committee will hear presentations from local and national university and business community leaders as well as testimony from students and parents to capture innovative input on how the university system can improve the student experience. These will be included in the final report to be submitted to the Transition Advisory Team and ultimately, the LSU Board of Supervisors.

The Student Experience Sub-Committee will hold its next meeting Thursday, March 14, in New Orleans, from 2:30-4:30 p.m., at a location to be determined.
