BATON ROUGE – The LSU Flores MBA Program’s Distinguished Speaker Series has been set
for this spring and will feature Roy O. Martin III, Marianne Jennings and Shawn Usher.
Martin will be the first to appear in the series, doing so Friday, Feb. 22, at 9:30
a.m. in the Distinguished Leaders Lecture Hall of The Auditorium at the Business Education
Martin is the president and chief financial officer of Roy O. Martin Lumber Company
LLC and Martin Timber Company LLC, two of the components that help comprise RoyOMartin.
Additionally, he is a director and co-founder of Indigo Minerals LLC, a Houston-based
oil and natural gas exploration company, and Perforex Forest Services LLC, a Louisiana
A native of Alexandria, La., Martin earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering
from LSU in 1982, and his MBA from LSU in 1985. Immediately after earning his bachelor’s
degree, Martin began his career as an engineer in Le Moyen, La. After earning his
MBA, he served as an accounting manager and eventually as sawmill superintendent at
Martco Limited Partnership.
Martin moved to the corporate office as an accounting manager in 1986, and, two years
later, was elected president of MHC Properties and secretary-treasurer of Roy O. Martin
Lumber Company and Martin Timber Company. In 1999, he was elected executive vice president
of Roy O. Martin Lumber Company.
Jennings, a member of the legal studies in business area of the Department of Supply
Chain Management in the College of Business at Arizona State University and a professor
of legal and ethical studies in business, is scheduled to speak as part of the series
Friday, March 8.
Jennings earned her undergraduate degree in finance and her J.D. from Brigham Young
University. She has worked with the Federal Public Defender and U.S. Attorney in Nevada
and has done consulting work for law firms, businesses and professional groups, including
Dial Corporation; Motorola; Southern California Edison; the Arizona Auditor General;
the cities of Phoenix, Mesa and Tucson; the Institute of Internal Auditors; AIMR;
Motorola; Hy-Vee Foods; IBM, Bell Helicopter, Amgen and VIAD.
Jennings joined the faculty at ASU in 1977 as an assistant professor. She was promoted
to associate professor in 1980 and to full professor in 1983. At ASU she teaches graduate
courses in the MBA program in business ethics and the legal environment of business.
She has authored more than 130 articles in academic, professional and trade journals
and has six textbooks and monographs in circulation.
Jennings’ weekly columns are syndicated around the country, and her work has appeared
in the Wall Street Journal, the Chicago Tribune, the New York Times, Washington Post
and the Reader’s Digest. A collection of her essays, “Nobody Fixes Real Carrot Sticks
Anymore,” was published in 1994. She was given an Arizona Press Club award in 1994,
for her work as a feature columnist. She has been a commentator on business issues
on All Things Considered for National Public Radio.
Usher, president of Sparkhound, is scheduled to wrap up the series Friday, April 26.
He earned both his MBA and bachelor’s degree in quantitative business analysis from
Usher formed Sparkhound in 1998, with a single-minded focus on improving clients’
business by increasing the value of their IT through leadership, solid technology
implementation and superior results. His business model was a direct result of personal
dealings with vendors who, all too often, lost sight of his ultimate business goals
in favor of specific technologies. This outcome-oriented approach helped Sparkhound
quickly earn a solid reputation with mid-sized and enterprise-level clients throughout
the Gulf South region.
Prior to forming Sparkhound, Usher led an innovative team of senior business consultants
with the General Health System – the parent company of three hospitals, a health insurance
company, and 25 smaller healthcare-related companies.
