BATON ROUGE – More than 1,000 LSU students, staff and faculty are expected to come together with Baton Rouge residents for the inaugural Geaux BIG Baton Rouge service project on April 20. Volunteers will work to improve homes, schools and non-profit organizations in areas of the city including Old South Baton Rouge, Mid-City and North Baton Rouge.
Geaux BIG Baton Rouge will bring together volunteers from across the community to complete projects requested by residents. More than 100 work sites are anticipated for the day, and will range from working in yards and painting to cleaning homes and visiting with the elderly. Volunteers will focus on real needs within the city limits by working on projects identified by Baton Rouge residents. Residents interested in requesting volunteers to assist in completing work at homes or non-profit organizations can complete a Job Request Form, found at http://geauxbig.lsu.edu, before Jan.18.
LSU students, staff and faculty, including student organizations, can register to volunteer between Jan. 22 and March 18 by visiting http://geauxbig.lsu.edu. Volunteering is a great way to learn about the community and Baton Rouge through meaningful service activities. It also gives volunteers the opportunity to meet other students, staff, faculty and community members.
Supporters of Geaux BIG Baton Rouge include the LSU Center for Community Engagement, Learning and Leadership; LSU Community University Partnership; LSU Residence Hall Association; the City of Baton Rouge – Office of the Mayor-President; and Mid-City Redevelopment Alliance.
Geaux BIG Baton Rouge is a one-day event that seeks to unite LSU students and Baton Rouge residents through service in order to strengthen the university’s relationship with the community. It is modeled after “The Big Event” program, which was established in 1982 at Texas A&M University.
