BATON ROUGE – The LSU Office of Equity, Diversity and Community Outreach and the Cinderella Project will co-host the Cinderella Project Leadership Academy from Thursday, Oct. 25, through Saturday, Oct. 27, at LSU. The academy is an intensive, college-prep workshop designed for 20 female high school students.
The academy’s objective is to immerse young women in a college setting, expose them to post-high school educational opportunities and inspire them to pursue their future academic goals. The academy’s curriculum is designed to assist participants in making the transition from high school to college by demystifying the college application process, connecting them with resources at LSU, and discussing the expectations of and demands on college students.
“The Leadership Academy represents an important expansion of the Cinderella Project’s services,” said Shelton Jones, co-founder of the Cinderella Project. “As we enter our sixth year of service to the community, we’re excited to host the Leadership Academy as we further our mission of empowering young women with increased self-confidence and self-esteem.”
Attendees will participate in panel discussions to increase their understanding of higher education, develop their leadership skills and enrich their knowledge of learning strategies. The academy will also provide students the opportunity to learn about applying to college and securing financial aid, audit a class, meet with a college counselor and participate in a community service project.
“LSU continues to look for new ways to expand educational opportunities and positively impact the community. The Cinderella Project’s Leadership Academy gives us a chance to promote both ideals at the same time,” said Brandon Smith, LSU community affairs liaison. “We applaud the Cinderella Project’s vision to empower young women, and we are ecstatic to partner in this endeavor.”
Each “graduate” of the academy will receive an $80 stipend to offset the cost of ACT testing fees and will be eligible to apply for a scholarship from the Cinderella Project if they are accepted and enrolled at a college or university in Louisiana.
2012 Leadership Academy sponsors are the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation, ExxonMobil, Fidelity Bank, the Goldring Family Foundation and the Junior League of Baton Rouge. The Louisiana State Police will also be hosting Cinderella Project Leadership Academy for one evening of the academy.
