BATON ROUGE – Fran Lawrence, Ourso Professor of Communication Studies in the Department
of Finance at LSU’s E. J. Ourso College of Business, has been appointed to the Advisory
Board of the Volunteer Health Corps, or VHC.
Lawrence, a charter member of the organization, has served on the VHC parent board
for five years, including a stint as treasurer. Although VHC is in the process of
defining the board, its main goal is to retain and engage critical members rotating
off the board. This is crucial to the clinic’s success because it is a volunteer-driven
“VHC provides a critical resource to both the hospitals as well as the indigent,”
Lawrence said. “The physicians relish the opportunity to do mission work in their
own backyard, and board meetings are always celebratory. When the opportunity of chairing
the advisory board came up, I was happy to do it.”
Because the VHC bylaws require the majority of parent board members be physicians,
Lawrence feels her business background is an essential asset in guiding the startup
and smooth transition to a fully funded nonprofit.
“I like being the business voice, and I enjoy the camaraderie outside of my typical
academic world,” Lawrence said. “I have learned much about the health care delivery
system and look forward to continuing service as a resource to VHC.”
Lawrence further explained the clinic’s unique partnership with LSU, in that it utilizes LSU Health System clinic space and assists uninsured patients referred by the public and private hospital emergency rooms. This partnership works to build a healthier community through access to health care for all.
The Volunteer Health Corps is a private non-profit organization serving in a volunteer
capacity as a catalyst to forge partnerships between the private medical community
and the public health sector in an effort to minimize delays in treatment, improve
access to care for urgent problems and minimize the use of emergency rooms for chronic
health problems. For more information about the VHC, visit http://www.volunteerhealthcorps.org/about_friends.htm.
