BATON ROUGE – LSU will honor the holiday traditions of Christmas, Kwanzaa and Hanukkah when it holds its annual Candlelight Celebration on Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 5 p.m. in the Claude L. Shaver Theatre in the Music & Dramatic Arts Building, with the lighting of LSU's Christmas tree immediately following in front of the Memorial Tower.
Members of the LSU and Baton Rouge communities are invited to join in the festivities and enjoy performances by Schola Cantorum, Cantabile String Quartet, the Ballroom Dance Club at LSU, LSU Gospel Choir, Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre, LSU Cheerleaders, Tiger Girls, Mike the Tiger and Santa Claus reading "A Cajun Night Before Christmas."
Volunteer LSU is asking the campus community to help local children in need by depositing new or gently used children’s coats in the boxes located around the Christmas tree during the Candlelight Celebration. Donations benefit the 23rd annual Pat’s Coats for Kids Drive hosted by WBRZ-TV. Visit www.volunteer.lsu.edu or email firstname.lastname@example.org for additional information.
A celebration of Kwanzaa, the weeklong celebration held from Dec. 26 through Jan. 1 in the United States, will also take place during the holiday celebration. Following the Candlelight Celebration, the African-American Cultural Center’s Pre-Kwanzaa Celebration will be held in the LSU Student Union Atchafalaya Room at 6 p.m.
The Candlelight Celebration will also be followed by Holiday on Campus at the University Recreation Center from 6-8 p.m., for LSU students, faculty, staff, their spouses and children. LSU Staff Senate will sponsor the 22nd-annual Holiday on Campus event. Those that attend are asked to bring a donation of a canned good for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank or a new, unwrapped toy for the U.S. Marine Corps' Toys for Tots program.
The LSU Christmas tree and LSU Candlelight Celebration are held in partnership with Volunteer LSU and sponsored through monetary contributions or in-kind donations provided by Campus Federal Credit Union, Coca-Cola Bottling Co., ExxonMobil, Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, Ricoh, Shell and LSU Dining, in cooperation with Community Coffee and Kleinpeter Farms Dairy.
