Safe Space Campaign

safe space logo

The goal of the Safe Space Campaign is to identify and educate individuals who will affirm and support all people regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. People displaying the Safe Space symbol are committed to combating hatred and discrimination through assistance and support.

In the training you will learn some basic LGBTQ+ terminology and ways to make your language more inclusive, identify some of the privileges of being a straight, non-transgender person, discuss the coming out process, and go over some ways that you can be a better ally to LGBTQ+ students on your campus.

Virtual Safe Space Trainings Now Available!

Due to social distancing guidelines, the LGBTQ+ Project has created an online version of the Safe Space Training offered via Moodle.  The new Moodle Safe Space Training is self-paced over the course of one week.  The trainings are opened on Mondays and close on Fridays. You are welcome to do the entire training in one sitting (roughly 4 hours), or you can do a little each day.

Who Can Register: The new Moodle-based Safe Space Training is open to anyone with an "@LSU.edu" email address. If you work at LSU-Baton Rouge and routinely use your "@lsu.edu" email, then no action is needed beyond registering for the training. LSU employees that do not work at the Baton Rouge campus will need to use their MyLSU credentials to attend the training. If this applies to you, make sure that you do the following before you register:

  1. Go to MyLSU
  2. Login with your MyLSU password and username (using your "@lsu.edu" email address)
  3. Click on the "Moodle" icon on the left side of the page. Confirm that you are logged into Moodle. This will be how you will access the training, and this step must be completed before we can register you.

To become a trainer, there are three requirements that must be met:

  • First, anyone who wants to be able to train others must go through the four-hour training with a current facilitator.
  • Second, following the training, you will get an in-depth review of the training layout (including facilitator notes), and a Q&A.
  • Third, you will co-host a training with a current facilitator followed by a review session.

If you are not local to Baton Rouge, Louisiana:

This is typically accomplished over the course of two days (day one covers the first and second parts, and day two is part three). This comes with a flash drive pre-loaded with our Safe Space booklet, all training materials, and training certificates.  The cost of this training is limited to printing costs of the booklets and a hotel stay and travel reimbursements for the current facilitator (if outside of Baton Rouge). Other than the program materials and travel, there is no cost for the actual workshop, however, we would strongly encourage and appreciate a donation to our LGBTQ+ Project fund to help us sustain these programs well into the future.

When you are ready to request a training, please email LGBTQProject@lsu.edu or call 225-578-4339.
