Effect of Forms 1095-C on Individual Tax Returns

When you file your 2017 tax return, you will be asked if you are enrolled in minimum essential coverage (“MEC”) to avoid a tax penalty. If you were a benefits-eligible employee in 2017 and LSU offered you and your spouse and dependents (if applicable) MEC for one or more months during the year, you will receive Form 1095-C that contains detailed information regarding the coverage LSU made available to you.

Please note that:

  • You do not file the Form 1095-C with your tax return.
  • You do not have to wait for the Form 1095-C to file your tax return.
  • If you are expecting to receive a Form 1095-A because you enrolled in a governmental Marketplace plan, you should wait to file your 2017 income tax return until you receive that form. You will only receive a Form 1095-A if you or a family member enrolled in a governmental Marketplace plan. The form will come from the government. LSU will not receive a copy of the form.

The detailed information from the official forms will allow you to determine if you were entitled to a premium subsidy from the governmental Marketplace. For additional assistance on premium subsidies, you should consult a tax advisor or contact a navigator in your state at www.heathcare.gov.
