Neighborhood Characteristics

We are interested in how Neighborhoods differ from each other.

Because our survey was conducted over several years,
we show mainly characteristics that probably don't change too much over time,
or where the neighborhood ranking probably doesn't change too much over time.

Maps show Neighborhoods (dark boundary lines; only available in Orleans Parish)
and Census Tracts (light boundary lines) .


Rooted in New Orleans

A combination of these factors:

  • How long lived in New Orleans
  • Family moved to New Orleans
  • Family living in GNO before Hurricane
  • Family living in GNO Now

 


Associational Membership

How many associations do you belong to?

 


Civic Engagement

A combination of these factors:

  • "Generally speaking, would you say that most people can be trusted or that you can't be too careful in dealing with people?" [Most people can be trusted.]
  • "About how often have you done the following?" Attended any public meeting in which there was discussion of town or school affairs. [Once a month or more.]
  • "Have you taken part in activities with the following groups and organizations in the past 12 months?" A neighborhood association like a block association; a homeowner or tenant association; or a crime watch group. [Yes.]
  • "Have you taken part in activities with the following groups and organizations in the past 12 months?" A charity or social welfare organization that provides services in such fields as health or service to the needy. [Yes.]
  • "In the past twelve months, have you served as an officer or served on a committee of any local club or organization?" [Yes.]

 


Social Trust

A combination of these factors:

  • Trust most people
  • Trust People in your neighborhood
  • Trust People you work with
  • Trust People at your Church
  • Trust People who work in the stores where you shop
  • Trust The police in your local community
  • Trust People outside your community

 


Member of a Neighborhood Association

Do you belong to a Neighborhood Association?

 


Rate Neighborhood Leaders

A combination of these factors:

  • Rate your neighborhood's representatives in city government
  • Rate The leadership of your neighborhood association

Good Grocery Shopping is Available in Your Neighborhood

"From your neighborhood where you live, how would you rate
the convenience and accessibility of grocery stores; food shopping?"

 


Good Retail Shopping is Available in Your Neighborhood

"From your neighborhood where you live, how would you rate
the convenience and accessibility of":

  • Grocery Stores; Food Shopping
  • Other Retail Stores
  • Restaurants
  • Cafes, Coffee Shops
  • Community Center; Recreation Center; Gym
  • Barber Shop, Hair or Nail Salon
  • Entertainment (music, movies, etc.)
  • Social Club, Tavern

 


Believe your Neighborhood can Recover from Katrina Damage

A combination of these factors:

What do you think about neighborhoods in the Greater New Orleans area?

  • With good engineering and adequate funding, the neighborhood I live in can be protected against major flooding
  • The neighborhood I live in can recover from the hurricane and flooding damage

Rate Government's Job in Disaster Recovery
