BATON ROUGE, La.—The LSU Union Art Gallery Committee in conjunction with Kids With Cameras, the United Jewish Federation of New York and Congregation B’nai Israel Hurricane Relief Committee is pleased to announce the opening of Where We Live: Children’s Photographs from FEMA’s Airport Village. The exhibit showcases photographs taken by displaced children ages 6-16 in FEMA’s Airport Village trailer park in Baton Rouge.

This exhibit will be held from Sunday, July 30 through Friday, August 4, 2006. A reception will be held on July 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

The concept for this exhibit was developed by Pam Connolly, a photographer and teacher from New York. Inspired by the documentary “Born Into Brothels” in which photographer Zana Briski teaches photography to children in the Red Light District of Calcutta, India, Connolly brought the same concept to the FEMA trailer park in Baton Rouge.

Connolly conducted a two-day workshop teaching a handful of children the basics of photography, before letting them free in the trailer village to practice what they had learned.

Participants include Keonna Collins, Marcus Collins, Loki Drummond, Alexis Lee, Melena Miles and

Kierra Springfield, under the instruction of Pam Connolly and Mark Teiwes.

“These photographs are a view into the reality of their living conditions at this time in their lives,” Connolly said. “I am never disappointed with how children see and document their environment. There is an honesty and freshness that emanates from their images.”

After the pictures were developed, the children were allowed to keep their cameras and were given additional rolls of film. The photography workshop continued for another four weeks under the direction of Mark Teiwes.
