Chief of Municipal Operations Announced

We are pleased to announce that Ken Fowler has been selected as Chief of Municipal Operations for the Carrol L. Herring Fire and Emergency Training Institute effective February 1.

 Ken is a fire service veteran with 33 years of experience. He began his career in in 1986 as a firefighter at the City of Fountain Inn,  South Carolina. Over the course of his assignment he worked his way to the rank of Chief Fire Officer. Ken also served as a training instructor at the South Carolina Fire Academy and also a USAR Task Force Leader at South Carolina Emergency Task Force I. Most recently, Ken has worked at FETI as a regional coordinator and Interim Recruit Academy Manager.

 In addition to Ken's years of experience, he also holds multiple fire service professional certifications and has earned both a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Masters of Science Leadership (MSL) with emphasis in Disaster Management and Executive Fire Leadership from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. He is currently finishing his requirements for a Doctorate of Education in Leadership with emphasis in Organizational Development.

In Ken’s new role at LSU FETI, he will be planning and directing all aspects of our center-based and regional municipal firefighting programs with assistance from our management team. His first goals as municipal chief are to develop training which will go beyond just minimum standards, provide a a career track to assist the volunteer community in reaching the end goals of certification, and to enhance officer training courses to assist fire officers in meeting the challenges of the 21st century fire service. 

Ken summed up his training philosophy with “A good firefighter knows how to do the job, but an educated firefighter knows why to do the job”. We’re fortunate to have Ken, and excited about his plans for both FETI and the Louisiana fire service.
