Hidden Figures Film Screening and Discussion

3/7/2017

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BATON ROUGE – In celebration of Women’s History Month in March, the LSU College of Science and College of Engineering will host Hidden Figures Revealed: Realizing the Dream, a panel discussion and screening of the 20th Century Fox movie production Hidden Figures on Friday, March 17.

“Hidden Figures is an inspiring story about three African American women who overcame issues of racial and gender inequality to help propel our space program to the next level. These women are no longer hidden figures. This movie brings their stories to the forefront for all of us to see,” said Cynthia Peterson, dean of the LSU College of Science. “We are excited to share this movie with the Baton Rouge community and introduce them to women scientists in our community who are making significant contributions to research, education and industry.”

“The LSU College of Engineering is very pleased to be participating in this event, as it helps to bring to light the important contributions of women engineers and scientists in some of our nation’s greatest technological advances—and we hope that it is an inspiration for new generations of women engineers and scientists,” said Judy Wornat, dean of the LSU College of Engineering.

DATE: Friday, March 17

TIME: 5 p.m. Movie Screening (theater doors open at 4:30 p.m.)

7 p.m. Panel Discussion

The panel discussion will feature local visionary women — noted scientists, educators and advocates for women and girls — who will share their experiences, obstacles and successes on their paths to realizing their dreams. Some of the discussion topics will include:

  • Overcoming obstacles to success
  • Maximizing opportunities for growth and achievement
  • Advancing women in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM
  • Realizing dreams

The event is free and open to the public.
