Workshops & Trainings

The Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Women’s Center offer a variety of professional development workshops and trainings. The following are broken into three tracks: Education, Advocacy and Allyship.  Though you can request the workshops in any order, the workshops are meant to be built from one another.

If you do not see anything that fits your needs, we may be able to tailor some of our existing trainings to reach your goals of creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment.  We look forward to working with you!

If you would like to schedule a training, please submit the training request form. Note that we will schedule a pre-assessment discussion, no more than 30 minutes to determine if the request is in alignment with your needs.

*Trainings requested less than 4 weeks from desired date will not be considered.

For Community Partners

LSU’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion welcomes the opportunity to work with community partners and facilitate any of the workshops/trainings listed below or create one specifically tailored to your organization’s needs.
 
Note there is a minimum facilitation cost of $500.00. 

The Search Committee training is to ensure a fair and equitable search through the lens of diversity.

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, in cooperation with the Office of Human Resource Management, presents Search Committee training for conducting a fair and equitable search through the lens of diversity. This training is open to all members of faculty and staff who are currently or will be sitting on an active search committee. 

This workshop is solely for individuals who have been identified by their department as a Diversity Advocate.

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, in cooperation with the Office of Human Resource Management, presents Diversity Advocate training. This training was specially created to assist those appointed as Diversity Advocates work collaboratively with the search committee chair to create an inclusive space for constructive dialogue that will ascertain a fair and equitable search process. This is open to all Diversity Advocates who are currently or will be sitting on an active search committee. 


Education

Description: This interactive workshop is designed to help participants learn more about the breadth and depth of diversity.

Time: 1 ½ hour to 2 hours

You will leave with a greater understanding of: 

  • Definitions, types, and issues relevant to diversity are explored.

Description: This stand-alone course focuses on raising awareness of unconscious bias and steps individuals can take to prevent biased attitudes and behaviors from interfering with workplace decisions and interactions.

Time: 1 ½ hour to 2 hours

You will leave with a greater understanding of: 

  • Defines the concept of unconscious bias
  • Depicts different types of unconscious biases
  • Demonstrates how biases can influence workplace decisions and interactions
  • Explains how to recognize personal biases and make more informed decisions
  • Explores the relationship between unconscious bias, diversity and inclusion and preventing discrimination.

Description: This is an interactive workshop designed to help participants learn more about cultural competencies and their importance. Definitions, levels, and varieties of cultural competency are shared and explored.

Time: 1 ½ hour to 2 hours

You will leave with a greater understanding of: 

  • Define cultural competency
  • Define cultural humility
  • Address the importance of cultural competency in the workplace
  • Explain factors and characteristics that affect one’s cultural identity
  • Explore ways to overcome cultural barriers
  • Explore actions for improving cultural competency at work

 


Allyship

Description: This workshop will help develop attendees’ ability to respond to microaggressions with clients and each other to help build an inclusive and equitable environment. It will also address strategies to help people move from being a bystander to being an ally. Break-out rooms will be used to role-play communication strategies for common microaggressions experienced by faculty and trainees.

Time: 1 ½ hour to 2 hours

You will leave with a greater understanding of: 

  • Further define microaggressions
  • Explain the negative effects and explore the impact it has on others and the workplace
  • Explore and define way to respond to microaggressions in a positive and effective manner

Description: Learn how to develop key behaviors of inclusion that enhance your capacity to communicate effectively, bridge across differences and foster greater levels of understanding.

Time: 1 ½ hour to 2 hours

You will leave with a greater understanding of: 

  • Discuss and learn key behaviors to improve workplace inclusion

Description: Conflict often arises when individuals or groups feel that their viewpoints are not heard or their needs are not valued. High performing leaders are attuned to their people’s viewpoints and needs and able to extract the underlying challenges that can simmer beneath the surface if not addressed effectively. 

Time: 1 ½ hour to 2 hours

You will leave with a greater understanding of: 

  • The powerful language of needs and emotions and how to name the root causes of conflict. 
  • Strategies to defuse tense and combative moments with compassion. 
  • How to transform conflict into greater connection and trust on your team.

 


Advocacy

Description: You will examine the concept of climate, specifically inclusive climates, as well as learn about the specific behaviors and skill you need to demonstrate in order to be successful in shaping an inclusive climate.

Time: 1 hour ½

 


Gender & Sexuality

Description: Customizable workshop or lecture that explores the dynamics of gender-based violence (sexual assault, stalking, dating/domestic violence) and the impact these forms of violence have on individuals, families, and communities. Can be offered in conjunction with Healthy Relationships and/or Profiles of Batterers.
Time: 1-3 hours

Description: Safe Space workshops teach faculty, staff, and students basic LGBTQ+ terminology, as well as ways to make your language more inclusive. This workshop helps attendees identify areas of privilege related to being straight and cisgender, it discusses the coming out process, and finally, it explores ways to become a better ally to the LGBTQ+ members of our community. Time: 4 hours required for certification.

Description: Can be provided as a presentation or workshop to explore the dynamics of healthy masculinity, how society constructs masculinity, individual/cultural barriers to healthy masculinity, and how to construct healthy masculinity.
Time: 1-2 hours

Description: Customizable workshop to explore and enhance leadership skills for women. Additional topics covered include dynamics of leadership, stereotypes about women leaders, leadership styles/strategies, mentoring, and personal leadership plans. Can be provided as one training/workshop or as a series of trainings/workshops.
Time: 1 hour - half day

Description: This workshop explores the importance of self-care and wellness (especially for women), barriers to self-care, and importance of prioritizing self-care. Participants will create a personal selfcare/wellness plan as part of the workshop.
Time: 1-2 hours

National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) at LSU

LSU is an affiliate campus of NCBI, a proven leadership development program to reduce or eliminate bias, discrimination, controversy, and interpersonal conflict on campus. This interactive program has the potential to impact your life and the lives of those around you.

The Welcoming Diversity Workshops and Controversial Issues Workshops are available for students, faculty, and staff members at LSU, the Paul M. Hebert Law Center, and LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. The program is free to all participants, but advance registration is required.
