Crawfish Season Opens on Sherburne W.M.A.
Posted: 3/2/08

The South Farm area of the Sherburne Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is open to recreational crawfishing from April 1 to July 31. The South Farm area is located on the eastern side of the Sherburne WMA, which is approximately 20 miles from Baton Rouge.

From Baton Rouge take Interstate 10 West, then take the Ramah exit and travel on the levee road north about 2 miles. After passing two cattle guards, take the levee ramp across the levee to where a parking area is located. From Hwy. 190 travel approximately 13 miles south on the East Guide Levee Road to the South Farm entrance.

“The South Farm area is a great place to spend a day outdoors with your family catching crawfish,” said LDWF Wildlife Biologist Tony Vidrine. “A family could catch enough crawfish from the South Farm area for a good quality crawfish boil.”

Anyone between the ages of 16 and 59 using the WMA must possess one of the following: a Wild Louisiana Stamp, a valid Louisiana fishing license, or a valid Louisiana hunting license. Persons 15 and younger or older than 60 years of age are exempt from this requirement.

Recreational crawfishing is limited to set nets or recreational wire traps with a 100-pound limit per vehicle or boat per day. Crawfishing is allowed from daylight to dark seven days a week.

For anyone utilizing recreational wire traps, a valid basic fishing and recreational gear license must be in their possession and each trap must be tagged with name and recreational license number.

Only 35 recreational traps are allowed per license, and no traps or nets may be left overnight. Also, no motorized watercraft are allowed on the South Farm complex. Walk-in or ATV access is provided to the crawfish ponds from the parking area. ATV’s may be used on limestone roads only and not beyond NO ATV warning signs.

Recreational crawfishing is also allowed on Salvador/Timken, Russell Sage, Dewey Wills, Grassy Lake, Ouachita, Pomme de Terre and Spring Bayou WMAs. Please consult the 2007-2008 Louisiana Hunting Regulations Pamphlet for more information on those seasons.

As on any WMA, please properly dispose of all waste generated from crawfishing. For information or a map of this area, call the LDWF Region 6 Office 337-948-0255 or the Sherburne WMA at 337-566-2251.
