Oyster Season to Close in the Sister Lake Public Oyster Seed Reservation
Posted: 11/16/07

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has announced that the 2007-08 oyster season in the Sister Lake Public Oyster Seed Reservation will close at one-half hour after sunset on Monday, Nov. 19, 2007.

The oyster season in this area was opened to harvest on Nov. 12, 2007 and will close 16 days earlier than originally scheduled.

Oyster harvest in the lake has provided valuable economic return to the Louisiana oyster industry. However, heavy harvest pressure in Sister Lake along with the removal of excessive amounts of non-living reef material with seed oyster loads by fishermen are threatening existing reef resources in the Sister Lake Public Oyster Seed Reservation. Protection of the reef resources from injury is important to the long-term sustainability of the public oyster resource.
