Shrimper Training Sessions Announced
Posted: 3/11/05

The LSU AgCenter will provide technical assistance training in April for shrimp producers who qualify for cash payments under the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program.

The dates, times and locations of the meetings are:

  • April 4 at 9 a.m. at the Westbank Regional Library in Harvey and at 3 p.m. at the Belle Chasse Library in Belle Chasse.
  • April 7 at 9 a.m. at the Iberia Parish Courthouse and at 3 p.m. in the Vermilion Parish Cooperative Extension Office.
  • April 8 at 9 a.m. in the Cameron Parish Police Jury Annex in Cameron and at 3 p.m. at the Slidell Auditorium in Slidell.
  • April 12 at 9 a.m. in the Larose Civic Center in Larose and at 2 p.m. at the Ward 7 Citizen’s Club in Chauvin.
  • April 14 at 9 a.m. at Isleno Center in St. Bernard.

A Vietnamese interpreter will be present at the Belle Chasse meeting on April 4 and the Vermilion Parish meeting on April 7.

Shrimp producers who marketed shrimp in Louisiana during 2003 have until April 11 to enroll in the TAA program at their local USDA Farm Service Agency office. In addition to making the initial application and meeting certain criteria, producers also must attend mandated training to become fully eligible to receive cash benefits.

This technical assistance training is offered by the LSU AgCenter at no cost to producers. All interested shrimp producers are encouraged to attend, even if they have not yet completed the initial application with the Farm Service Agency.

In addition, producers who have applied under the TAA program in surrounding states can attend one of the Louisiana meetings to satisfy training requirements.

A producer needs to attend only one of the three-hour training meetings to fulfill the training requirements of the TAA program.
