Asimina triloba

Pawpaw

Family:  Annonaceae
Zone:  5-9                               Average Size:  20’H x 15”W

Identification: Brown, pubescent buds; deep maroon flowers with six petals hanging down like small bells, drooping leaves, oblong 6-12”; large yellow-green fruit in late summer, fall.

Note:  Another unusual native species.  Traditionally found along streams and rivers as an understory tree, the pawpaw has proved to be quite adaptable.  Trees grown in full sun orchards for fruit production become quite dense and pyramidal in form.  From a distance they resemble magnolia species with their large drooping leaves.  Interesting flowers, large edible fruit, pawpaw has something for everyone.

Campus Location: School of Renewable Natural Resources, south law
