Acer palmatum var. dissectum

Laceleaf Japanese Maple

Family:  Aceraceae
Zone:  5-9                               Average Size:  6-8’H x 10-12’W

Identification: Opposite arrangement of stems and leaves, almost completely dissect leaf, heavily toothed giving a lace-like appearance; small samara, usually few in number.

Note:  Among Japanese Maples the laceleaf varieties are the most elegant.  Care must be taken when sighting a laceleaf maple.  An ideal location may be in a raised planter where the spreading branches may cascade down and the improved drainage will help the chances of survival.  Observation and experience seems to support the poor adaptability of the variety in the deep south.  This should not discourage the designer from considering this species.
