Kickoff LSU Provides Prospective Students and Parents an Open House to Campus

On Saturday, Sept. 8, LSU will welcome a national television audience on ESPN, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. against the University of Washington. But, for about 200 prospective students and their parents, "Kickoff" will take place more than 24 hours before placekicker James Hairston puts his foot to the pigskin in Tiger Stadium.

Virtual Tour
For those unable to attend Kickoff or those who want to learn more about LSU, the online virtual tour allows prospective students and their parents to get a true sense of what life is like on campus.

Offered for the fourth year in a row through the Office of Enrollment Management (formerly Undergraduate Admissions & Student Aid), Kickoff LSU is a day-long, on-campus open house, where prospective students and their parents can get better acquainted with LSU and what it has to offer.

"We want to give prospective students every opportunity to learn about all the aspects of being a student at LSU," said Danielle Chauvin, manager of Programs & Campus Tours with the Office of Enrollment Management. "We want them to make a very informed college decision, and we hope to provide them very valuable information about academics, living on campus, recreation, involvement and many more."

Kickoff LSU events will be held on the Friday before most of the LSU home football games. These dates include Sept. 7, Sept. 14, Sept. 28, Oct. 12, Nov. 9 and Nov. 16.

Chauvin said the events "are popular because families like to take in the whole game weekend experience while also learning about the amazing academic opportunities."

"We enjoy hosting Kickoff LSU because we like to provide students with a more intimate and personalized experience," she said.

This intimate and personalized experience allows participants exposure to the opportunities offered at LSU by meeting with campus faculty and staff, current LSU students and representatives from various departments and organizations, and to become familiar with campus life at LSU.

Kickoff LSU is structured around prospective students' desired academic programs, so students get to select the presentations that are of the most interest to them. Students will meet with representatives from LSU's 10 senior colleges to get information on the more than 235 academic fields of study offered. In addition to meeting with senior colleges, participants will have the opportunity to "pick and choose" the events that are most appealing to their interests. These events may include a campus tour; admissions and student aid presentations; residence hall tours; Academic Programs Abroad presentations; Honors College presentations; or a tour of the University Recreation, or UREC, facilities; among others.

Postcard invites to Kickoff LSU were mailed to prospective high school seniors who have shown interest in LSU by attending a campus tour, submitting test scores, attending a high school fair or signing up to be a Tiger Insider. However, the program is open to all high school seniors who want to know more about LSU. Anyone interested in attending can register at the Kickoff LSU website,

Students and parents who attend Kickoff LSU should wear comfortable shoes, as LSU is a walking campus. When attending, be sure to arrive early enough to park; bring a notebook and pen to write down important information; watch the forecast and bring a poncho, raincoat or umbrella if needed; and don't forget to bring a camera to take pictures of LSU's beautiful and historic campus.

Chauvin reminds students to leave the day open and free of distractions to enjoy everything LSU has to offer.

For students unable to attend Kickoff LSU, the Office of Enrollment Management offers a number of events throughout the year both on and off campus. These include:

LSU's Spring Receptions are off-campus programs hosted in the cities throughout Louisiana and the United States for high school juniors and seniors. These receptions provide personal interaction with representatives from LSU. Please register as a Tiger Insider at to be invited to a Spring Reception.
