Building Community

Greek Build 2019

LSU Greek life, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge, began construction on two new projects as fraternities and sororities kick off Greek Week 2019.  More than 15,000 members of LSU fraternities and sororities were scheduled to work with families and partners on this year’s projects.

The Williams and Richard families, both of which are very excited about working alongside the students, will occupy the two homes. Ms. Patricia Richards took an opportunity to thank the Greek community saying, “I’m especially grateful and find it astounding that college students are willing to give up their free time to help me.”

Since the creation of this partnership in 2004, the LSU Greek community has raised nearly $2 million and has supported the construction of 26 different homes. Overall, LSU’s fraternities and sororities have donated over 49,000 hours of service as they work alongside the homeowners and other partners to build the homes.

LSU’s Greek Week Build was the first in the U.S. to partner a major university’s entire Greek community with a Habitat affiliate. The students take this opportunity to learn firsthand about poverty and the importance of affordable housing. LSU’s Greek community has helped 34 adults and 59 children find safe and stable homes.
