Computer Refresh Cycle

About This Initiative

The LSU College of Music & Dramatic Arts is establishing a computer refresh cycle.  This upgrade cycle will provide the CMDA faculty and staff with computers more capable of completing daily tasks and result in a decreased need for maintenance and troubleshooting.

Computers will be refreshed on a 5-year cycle.  Requests for new computers in a shorter timeframe will require written justification for administrative approval as to why the out-of-cycle purchase is necessary.

A major component of this refresh cycle will be the implementation of a computer standardization plan.  There are four standard options from which to choose when requesting a new computer.  There is the choice between a MacOS-based (Apple) or a Windows OS-based (Dell) computer.  For each operating system/manufacturer choice, there is the option for a desktop or laptop.

More Information

The standardization of the models is designed to significantly reduce costs and make our college more efficient in ordering, troubleshooting, and maintaining an inventory of computers, parts, and software. Requests for upgrades or specifications outside of the outlined standardized models will require written justification in writing for administrative approval and may require funds from professorships, area funds, grants, etc. be used to support additional costs.

The CMDA will only consider one computer per employee as part of this refresh cycle, as well as for regular maintenance.  Additionally, personal computers, tablets, and phones will not be supported by CMDA IT staff.

The college administration, with assistance from the CMDA IT staff, will determine the priority for computer upgrades. By the end of the 2020-21 academic year, we anticipate being completely on cycle with the upgrades.

If you are contacted about a replacement as part of the cycle, or otherwise wish to make a request, you may do so using the Computer Hardware Purchase Request Form, located on the faculty resource webpages of the School of Music and School of Theatre websites.
