Students,

I hope you are all having a great summer. On this Friday in late July, the School of Music staff is readying things for the new school year. Likewise, the faculty are designing courses, preparing syllabi, making programming choices, planning recitals, and arranging an attractive guest artist line-up. We are hopeful that fall 2021 will present fewer challenges to a normal semester than we experienced pre-vaccine. Fingers crossed!

Clearly, though, the COVID-19 battle persists. I write to encourage all students to get vaccinated prior to arriving on campus. A quote from the LSU Health and Medical Advisory Committee applies:

The best thing you can do to keep yourself and our community safe is to get vaccinated if you haven’t already, and encourage others to do the same. These vaccines are safe and extremely effective in preventing serious illness, hospitalization and death. In Louisiana 90% of hospitalizations and 91% of deaths from COVID-19 are in individuals who have not been fully vaccinated, including young adults.

For the performing arts community, COVID-19 has presented enormous challenges. We have adapted and sacrificed. We share a goal of keeping the LSU community healthy. We also share a goal when we stand up for the Arts and stand up for Music at a time when the Arts and Music are threatened. We will continue to respond with resourcefulness and fortitude. Get the shot.

Looking forward to seeing you!
