Faculty News

Brett Boutwell's article “Keller’s Zak, Duchamp’s Mutt, and the Art of the Ruse” is forthcoming in Modernism/modernity, the journal of the Modernist Studies Association. In 2018 he became President of the Southern Chapter of the American Musicological Society.

Andreas Giger’s critical edition of Verdi’s I due Foscari (Ricordi and the University of Chicago Press) was published in 2017. His critical edition of Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci (Bärenreiter) is scheduled for publication later this year, and his article “‘Svesti la giubba,’ or, Uncloaking the Genesis of Pagliacci” will appear in the March edition of 19th-Century Music.

Blake Howe’s essay “Musical Remediations of Disability” will appear in The Oxford Handbook of Music and the Body (forthcoming from Oxford University Press). He is Recording Reviews Editor for the journal Nineteenth-Century Music Review.

Alison McFarland is preparing two chapters in a volume on the Requiem in the Renaissance, forthcoming from Katholic University Leuven.

Student News

Vivian Buchanan is currently writing her master’s thesis on performance practice in early recordings of Debussy solo piano works.

Katlin Harris presented a paper on Schubert’s Wanderer Fantasy at the AMS-Southern Chapter Meeting.

Andrew Owen presented a paper at the International Conference on the Blues about the way the early blues singer Charlie Patton modified words for musical effects. He is currently researching intersections of music and esoteric societies such as the Rosicrucians and the Theosophical Society.

Leanny Muñoz received the Eileen Southern Travel Fund award from the American Musicological Society to attend the 2017 Annual Meeting in Rochester, New York. She also presented at the 2018 American Musicological Society – Southern Conference.

Michael Palmese has contributed a chapter to the recently-published edited collection overseen by Laura Dolp, Arvo Pärt’s White Light: Media, Culture, and Politics. Michael has also recently published an article on Beckett and Foucault in the journal Samuel Beckett Today/Aujourd’hui. Various reviews by Michael have appeared in American Music, The Journal of Beckett Studies, Tempo, Nineteenth Century Music Review, and The Harold Pinter Review.
