Academic Studies


The LSU Department of Bands and LSU School of Music offer a wide variety of academic studies and performance opportunities for students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Undergraduate

Undergraduates enrolling with the LSU School of Music can participate in any of the major Department of Bands concert ensembles, including:

Ensemble participation is a key requirement of all LSU School of Music undergraduate degree programs. However, ensembles are open to all degree majors across LSU, and we welcome anyone to audition.

Graduate

In addition to ensemble participation, LSU offers prospective graduate students both masters and DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) programs in wind conducting. The LSU Department of Bands provides a comprehensive experience for graduate conductors, including working within three concert ensembles, a chamber ensemble, and all aspects of the athletic band program.

Interested candidates must submit an application to the LSU Graduate School and LSU School of Music as a prerequisite to any further steps.

LSU School of Music - Graduate Admissions Information

Candidates must submit the following materials to the LSU Department of Bands for pre-screening. This step can be done in parallel with your application to the LSU Graduate School and LSU School of Music.

  • A face-to-the-camera video. The video should be approximately 30 minutes in length and include 15 minutes of rehearsal and 15 minutes of performance. The repertoire is the applicant's choice, but should represent a variety of styles.
  • A repertoire list of pieces conducted in performance.

Based on the pre-screening materials, selected candidates will be invited to participate in an on-campus audition, which will consist of the following:

  • Candidates will lead an approximately 20 minute rehearsal with the LSU Wind Ensemble or LSU Symphonic Winds. The rehearsal repertoire will be chosen in consultation with the candidate and attending faculty.
  • Candidates will participate in an in-person interview with the Department of Bands faculty.

Following the on-campus audition, the Director of Bands and the LSU School of Music will notify accepted candidates.
