LSU Lab School Honored by American Heart Association For Fundraising Efforts
The LSU Laboratory School was named the “Top Turner” in the Greater Southeast Affiliate of the American Heart Association, or AHA, and the 10th top school in the nation, raising a total of $36,233 for the AHA in Jump Rope for Heart.
The Greater Southeast Affiliate of the AHA is comprised of the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Puerto Rico.
The Jump Rope for Heart program educates students on the importance of heart health while giving them the opportunity to raise donations for life-saving research.
With assistance from the entire physical education department, elementary grades physical education teachers Joanna Faerber, Carrie Chandler, Christina Villarreal and secondary grades physical education teacher Vickie Braud organized the event. The teachers incorporated heart health lesson plans and exciting educational activities like “Cardiac Arrest,” a tag game played on the football field, into their three-week campaign.
The school-wide program included a “Red Out” pep rally and students vs. faculty volleyball game. Kindergarten student Anna Claire Kouns was the school’s top fundraiser, collecting more than $2,300. She placed fourth in student fundraising in the Greater Southeast Affiliate.
“I wanted my daughter to see the importance of doing for others,” said Candace Kouns, Anna Claire’s mother. “She asked for all the donations herself and even wrote handwritten thank-you letters to each and every donor.”
The school will be partnering with the AHA again this school year and is planning to hold their event in the month of February.
The LSU Laboratory School serves more than 1,300 K-12 students and operates through the LSU College of Human Sciences & Education as an independent school system and an educational research center. It was named by the U. S. News & World Report as one of the country’s top 1,000 public high schools, and also received an “A” on the annual School Report Card from the Louisiana Department of Education.
