anngilbertCHSE Ambassador Ann Gilbert

Ann is a Child & Family Studies major in CHSE's School of Social Work.

Q: Why did you choose LSU?

A: I fell in love with LSU when I toured the campus for the first time. Everyone I met was so friendly and helpful; I felt at home right away.  LSU provides its students with so many potential leadership positions and job opportunities starting their first semester. I also chose LSU because as an out of state student, I love that I could hop one state over from Texas and live in a completely different culture. LSU was the only school I applied to!

Q: Why did you choose Child & Family Studies as your major?

A: I chose Child & Family Studies because it provides students with a practicum, an internship, and experience observing preschoolers at the LSU Laboratory Preschool. I also have loved all of my classes and professors in the Child & Family Studies major so far!

Q: What are you most excited for this semester?

A: This semester, I am most excited to begin volunteering at the Crisis Intervention Center.

Q: Why did you apply to be a CHSE Ambassador?

A:  I applied to be an ambassador because I wanted to recruit students to CHSE. I had no idea that the Child & Family Studies major existed until a few months into my freshman year. I want to help other students learn about CHSE and the many things it has to offer early on.

Q: What advice would you give to someone contemplating your major?

A: I would tell them that they should not declare Child & Family Studies as their major just because they think kids are cute. There is so much more to the major than that! This major’s coursework includes several serious subjects such as poverty, abuse, and suicide, and a student should be interested in studying those things as a CFS major.

Q: What is something that surprised you about LSU or CHSE?

A:  I was surprised by just how friendly and welcoming everyone is at LSU! I know my professors are always happy to help me with my classes. The faculty members are here to help me achieve my goals such as completing an internship and writing my Honors thesis. I have also made so many incredible friends! I had no problem finding friends as an out of state student.

Q: What do you plan to do with your degree once you graduate?

A: I plan to go on to get my Master’s degree and PhD. I want to work in either social work, counseling, or crisis intervention.

An interesting fact about me is I am a certified scuba diver.

My dream job would be a licensed professional counselor.

My favorite LSU tradition is the songs that the band always plays at the football games.
