BATON ROUGE – LSU CAS Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader Joseph DeCorte was recognized as a part of the Tiger Twelve Class of 2019. The Tiger Twelve are selected due to their academic achievements and commitment to the LSU community standards, which include: holding themselves to the highest standards of academic, personal and social integrity; practicing justice, equality and compassion in human relations, and respecting the dignity of all persons and accept individual differences.

DeCorte currently leads SI sessions for organic chemistry and will be graduating in May 2019.

“Joseph has shown an incredible amount of enthusiasm and dedication to his students during his time with us as an SI leader. He has focused continuously on ensuring that his students have a strong understanding of not only the material at hand during the course, but on developing skills which will allow them to be successful in future courses. Even when explaining difficult concepts, he remains patient and understanding, imbuing his sessions with a sense of fun while also remaining highly informative,” said Libby Taylor LSU CAS Supplemental Instruction Coordinator.

DeCorte explained SI helped shape his understanding of the LSU Community and what it means to hold himself accountable to the Dean of Students standards who award the Tiger Twelve.

“Through the SI program, I am consistently inspired by just how resilient and motivated the students in our community are in their learning. Intrinsic motivation is often a struggle in any job, but I have seen students this semester put in a Herculean effort to get the grade they need to achieve their goals. The SI program has been a powerful demonstration that our community contains the most motivated people I have ever met -- bar none. In part, this motivation is why I dedicate myself to the tenets of responsibility for my actions and contributing positively to my community in the Dean's Commitment to Community,” Decorte said.

After graduation DeCorte plans to use his mathematics and biochemistry degree from LSU to work in Dr. Rebecca Baron’s laboratory at Harvard Medical School to investigate host defense against sepsis and apply to M.D. Ph.D. programs for matriculation in 2020.

The Tiger Twelve Class of 2019 will be recognized in a reception held on Saturday, April 6 from 2:30 – 5:00 p.m. in the Rotunda of the LSU Business Education Complex. To find out more about LSU CAS Supplemental Instruction, please visit the Supplemental Instruction page on the CAS website.
