Students with Disabilities
The job search process can be overwhelming for any student. The LSU Olinde Career Center is committed to supporting students with both visible and non-visible disabilities throughout their career exploration and preparation process.
There are many important things to consider when approaching the internship or job search and when applying to graduate programs. Many students may experience questions dealing with the following:
- What laws apply to me?
- Your rights when seeking employment.
- What are my rights under the ADA?
- What is a "reasonable accommodation"?
The Americans with Disabilities Act provides federal protections and prevents private employer's, state and local governments, employment agencies and labor unions from discriminating against qualified individuals with disabilities in job application procedures, hiring and other conditions.

Disclosing a Disability
Choosing when and how to disclose a disability is an important and personal decision. There is no one-size-fits-all answer for when to disclose. The National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability compiled a nationally recognized book and resources on disability disclosures.

Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP): WRP connects undergraduate, graduate students and recent graduates with disabilities who are interested in paid internships and full-time opportunities to private sector employers and federal agencies.
Career Opportunities for Students with Disabilities: COSD assists students and recent grads in becoming more prepared and competitive with their career search.
Bender Consulting: Assists individuals with disabilities in getting hired and recruited for positions within the private and public sector.
Lime Connect: This organization assists student with scholarships, professional development webinars along with information about internships and full-time job opportunities.
Entry Point: Entry Point is a program of the American Association for the Advancement of Science that offers internship opportunities for students with disabilities. Internships will range in discipline from Computer Science, Business to Science and Engineering.

The American Association of People with Disabilities: This organization provides a Congressional Internship Program for College Students with Disabilities. It’s open to undergraduate and graduate students, in addition to recent grads

Connecting Students with Disabilities and Employment: Video of the Career Panel hosted on 2/5/14. Information was given on how students can approach the internship and job search process with a disability, in addition to laws and rights every student should be aware of.
American Foundation for the Blind: AFB provides a list of visually impaired and blind mentors that students can connect with depending on their career interests. Students can also explore careers through this site and receive tips on the career search
