A Message from the Associate Vice Provost for International Programs

photo of Hector ZapataDear LSU International Friends,

We are back with some great news stories for your reading!

Scholarships were awarded to four outstanding international students from Colombia, Honduras, Nepal and Sri Lanka; these students reflect the opportunities at LSU not only on academics but leadership development and service, which the scholarship program recognizes.

Exchange students bring diversity to our classroom and community life: read the story of cultural exchange LSU-Mendel University. Read on other “student peer advisors” and student workers on their experience abroad and at LSU. Internationalization Grants were created by LSU International Programs to provide seed funding to faculty who promote LSU’s global engagement. Dr. Maria Otamendi from the School of Music provides one example via an academic exchange with Brazilian universities. Similarly, the Study Abroad Scholarship program continues to support students who want to study abroad by connecting them with international students. We also tell you about new faces at International Programs. International students showcase the cultures of the world at International Fusion 2019….you don’t want to miss this one!

Enjoy the letter.

For all of you basketball fans: LSU did great in March Madness.

Geaux Tigers!

Tiger Spotlight: Alice-Norah Nankya

English universities offer two options for their undergraduate students: they can take a three-year undergraduate program, or they can add a fourth year and study abroad.  As the most adventurous member of her family, Alice-Norah Nankya chose to study abroad for a year in Louisiana.  Learning a new culture and learning about race relations in the United States were some of her goals as she prepared to study abroad here.

The Meeting of Two Cultures: Czech Republic and Louisiana

At the beginning of the fall semester, a group of students from Interior Design at Louisiana State University visited the faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology at Mendel University in Brno. These students were working in conjunction with Paul Callahan, the dean of the College of Art and Design and Alena Sobotková, a PhD student from Mendel University who was working as an exchange student at LSU for a year. Thanks to this event the cooperation between both universities was broadened and the work the students produced was outstanding.

"I was unaware of my intense passion for travelling and experiencing new cultures before spending a semester in the U.K. Taking the opportunity to study abroad not only enhanced my academic record, it opened my mind to the possibility of exploring new cultures and discovering more about myself. I am continuously inspired by each student who walks into our office in hopes of beginning their very own academic journey across the world."

"I love the people I work with in International Programs.  It is refreshing to be able to connect people with things they need.  I love being able to put a smile on international students' faces when they come see us. We do our very best to make sure each student feels comfortable and to get them to the place they want to be."

Alumni Spotlight: Chris Siverd

Students can be instrumental in forming new programs. Chris Siverd helped spread the word that there was a new study abroad option in Germany for study abroad students. “I was really interested in going on a program in Germany, so I helped out at the Study Abroad Fair and helped recruit students in my department,” Chris says. “I would highly recommend to anyone who is interested in going to join the Engineering in Germany program. It will broaden your horizons and you’ll be able to explore more of Europe.”

Peer Advisor Spotlight: Claire

Marshall

Studying abroad is an opportunity within higher education where you can experience another culture and language hands-on. That’s exactly what LSU senior Claire Marshall did. She spent a year in Ecuador improving her Spanish language skills and studying biology. Claire currently uses her study abroad experiences to convince others to have the same memorable experiences by being an APA Study Abroad Peer Advisor.

LSU International Programs is focused on expanding our students’ horizons.  There are not many barriers in front of a student who wishes to simply have a conversation every week with one of our international students.

The LSU Study Abroad Scholarship Program is a volunteer program, created in the summer of 2016 by Dr. Hector Zapata, Associate Vice Provost for LSU International Programs. The program is managed and administered by LSU Academic Programs Abroad and enables domestic LSU students to meaningfully interact with international students through a variety of peer activities.
