Dear Colleagues,
I hope you and all of your loved ones are safe following Hurricane Ida. Many of our
students, faculty and staff have been directly and adversely impacted by the storm
on top of the pandemic. It has been a challenging start to the semester, and I am
thankful for your patience and cooperation as we make necessary adjustments to campus
operations and protocols. Although these are trying times, I am heartened by the support
of the LSU community for one another. Given our strong history of resilience and our
enduring commitment to the community, it is not surprising that there are many accounts
of LSU Tigers who have gone above and beyond to ensure the health and safety of others.
Despite these obstacles, we are now officially in our second week of the fall semester,
and it has been wonderful to see colleagues and students on campus. The summer was
full of great accomplishments, such as our record-breaking graduating class, and the
fall is predicted to produce even more extraordinary results. Our achievements are
the product of the tremendous dedication and talent of our LSU faculty and staff.
Your unyielding commitment continually drives us to new heights.
In keeping with the theme of “Scholarship First,” I am happy to share that we have
yet another freshman class with superior academic credentials. Our revised Welcome
Week challenged them to think more deeply than ever before about becoming a learner,
and these activities saw record levels of engagement from the class of 2025. With
this class, we are again finding that LSU remains an attractive destination for students
because of its strong academic reputation. We continue to remain committed to opportunity
and access for prospective and current students. Accessibility, rigorous academic
standards and great value will continue to serve us well as we demonstrate excellence
through innovation in everything we do.
Faculty surpassed prior institutional records for research dollars awarded over the
last year, totaling a staggering $166 million. Again, aligned with our emphasis on
“Scholarship First,” this achievement is the result of a collective effort of our
entire community and spans many different disciplines and research support offices.
This is an incredible win for our tireless and enterprising faculty, our unparalleled
professional staff that support the research infrastructure, and our graduate and
undergraduate students who benefit from research experiences on our campus every day.
I am honored to have the opportunity to witness these achievements firsthand. Our
great and storied institution continues to serve as a beacon of hope and promise for
legions of students who will ultimately bring our community and society to new heights,
all because of the inspiration and tutelage you provide on a daily basis. Thank you
for all that you do to make our students’ dreams a reality, and as always…Geaux Tigers!

LSU Welcomes over 100 New Faculty Members to Campus
On Tuesday, August 17, LSU welcomed its newest faculty members at its annual New Faculty
Summit hosted by the Office of Academic Affairs. The summit welcomed new faculty with
sessions on effective teaching, university policy, promotion and tenure, research
resources, Civil Rights & Title IX, diversity, equity and inclusion and more. Learn

Lucien “Luke” Laborde Jr. Named Interim LSU Vice President for Agriculture and Dean
of the College of Agriculture
 LSU President William F. Tate IV has named Lucien Laborde Jr., an Avoyelles Parish
native, as interim vice president for agriculture and dean of the College of Agriculture.
Laborde replaces Bill Richardson, who recently stepped down from his administrative
position to return to faculty in the College of Agriculture. To read more about Luke

Jacqueline Bach Named Acting Vice Provost of Academic Programs & Support Services
LSU has appointed Jacqueline Bach as acting vice provost for academic programs and
support services in the Office of Academic Affairs, effective Aug. 3. Bach will continue
to serve while a national search is conducted for an executive vice president and

Kappie Mumphrey Appointed as Interim Vice President for Online & Continuing Education
Kappie Mumphrey has been appointed by the Office of Academic Affairs as interim vice
president of LSU Online & Continuing Education. Mumphrey will serve in an interim
role beginning Sept. 25 until the conclusion of a national search for a permanent
vice president.

 As we continue to advance our innovative instruction and research efforts, our office
will highlight the innovative work our faculty bring to the classroom. LSU's Learning
& Teaching Collaborative chair, associate professor in education in the College of
Humanities & Social Sciences and a 2021 SEC Academic Leadership Development Program

‘Stay Consistent’ Key Theme During REFRESH Faculty Seminar
 Prior to LSU welcoming back its faculty to campus, LSU’s Learning & Teaching Collaborative
hosted a half-day seminar and workshop, REFRESH: New Energy for Teaching, open to
LSU and its branch campuses to provide faculty an opportunity to refresh and reset
for the fall semester. The seminar welcomed a student panel and keynote speaker, Dr.

COVID-19 Mitigation Training for Large Classrooms
The LSU Office of Academic Affairs has developed a COVID-19 Mitigation Training for
Large Classrooms. The training includes: key measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19,
strategies and suggestions. The training is available in Moodle.

Proposals for Spring 2022 Honors Courses
The Office of Academic Affairs invites you to become part of the Honors faculty by
submitting a course proposal to the Ogden Honors College for spring 2022. For more
information on teaching opportunities in the Honors College, and to find instructions

Transitioning from Faculty 360 to Elements
The LSU A&M campus will soon be transitioning from one faculty activity reporting
system (Digital Measures aka “Faculty 360”) to a new vendor called Elements by Symplectic.
We will begin a transition process over the fall 2021 semester. Part of this process
involves the Elements system downloading information entered into Faculty 360 so it
can be imported into the new Elements system. There are two action items for faculty
in preparation for this transition. First, we are asking faculty and departments to
discontinue entering new faculty activities into Faculty 360 beginning September 3.
Second, we strongly encourage you to generate and download a current copy of your
PS-36 CV from Faculty 360 for archiving, especially if you routinely use Faculty 360
for that purpose.
 
School of Collaborative Academic Programs
