Public entities, nonprofit organizations, foundations, and other businesses are welcome to recruit our students for part-time or full-time employment. In addition, the majority of the public administration classes are held at night, allowing for flexibility in work schedules for both full- and part-time students.
A Reputation of Public Service Excellence
Through our 45-hour degree MPA program, our students are trained in a variety of critical public management and public policy competency areas, including the ability to lead and manage in public governance and the ability to communicate and interact productively with a diverse and changing workforce and citizenry. Now in its 43rd year, the MPA program is accredited by the Network of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration and was ranked ninth in the nation among public colleges and universities by Eduniversal.
Specifically, MPA students are expected to become proficient in a variety of key subject matter areas related to public management and public policy, including applied statistical analysis, organizational behavior and analysis, human resource management, decision making, and public budgeting and financial management. In addition, our pre-service students obtain valuable experience in public sector employment through the department’s internship course.
When rated by employers, students in the LSU MPA program received an overall 95% satisfaction rating based on their ability to:
- Analyze and synthesize information
- Display interest in the mission and functions of the organization
- Interact with other employees and citizens served
- Contribute to the policy process of the organization
- Demonstrate management abilities in public governance
Summer Practicum/Internship Credit
The Department of Public Administration offers students three credit hours of coursework for completing either the Practicum (in-service) or Internship (pre-service) course. For employers who are looking to employ graduate students on a part-time basis, this is an excellent opportunity to bring in employees with new perspectives who also have public management knowledge and understanding. Additionally, students are able to earn compensation while earning this credit.
