The LSU E. J. Ourso College of Business Wall Street Prep announce an educational partnership that incorporates Wall Street Prep’s online courses into the LSU Finance Department’s Corporate Finance curriculum

January 26, 2021

BATON ROUGE- LSU's E. J. Ourso College of Business is proud to highlight its existing educational partnership with Wall Street Prep, a corporate finance training company based in Brookline, MA. LSU’s Department of Finance believes this partnership is a critical component of its educational mission to (1) prepare its students with the fundamental skills required by employers for a corporate finance entry-level role through a rigorous curriculum and applied practical training opportunities and (2) provide its best and brightest students with additional specialized technical training and educational resources needed to compete nationally for the most competitive summer internships and full-time positions in the areas of investment banking, private equity, commercial banking, equity research, asset management, corporate FP&A, and valuation services.

Founded in 2004, Wall Street Prep (WSP) has been a global leader in corporate finance, accounting, valuation, and m&a focused training for many of the world’s most recognizable financial institutions including 7 of the top 10 global investment banks, and 4 of the top 5 middle market investment banks. The popularity and effectiveness of their training has led WSP to expand its product offerings to higher education, where their online course materials have been integrated into the curriculum for top MBA and undergraduate business schools.

As part of its educational partnership with LSU, finance majors now have access to the WSP suite of online courses. These online resources enable LSU professors to provide students with access to WSP’s robust library of online content that includes courses in accounting, Excel, PowerPoint, analyzing financial reports, bonds/credit, and technical interview prep, as well as specialized corporate finance courses that provide the complex, technical training desirable for analysts working in investment banking, commercial banking, equity research, m&a, and asset management. These include courses on financial statement modeling, discounted cash flow, LBO modeling, accretion/dilution modeling, and market multiple transaction trading comps.

The partnership between LSU and WSP first began in 2019 and was initially connected to FIN 3910, which is an elective on valuation, mergers, and acquisitions. It was subsequently expanded department-wide to include the core class of FIN 4830, Financial Statement Analysis. During 2020, over 100 students subscribed to the WSP online course suite, which brought LSU’s cumulative student subscription total to over 225 students. "We began our LSU relationship with a pilot program back in the spring of 2019 to demonstrate how Wall Street Prep’s online courses could complement the Excel and modeling skills already being taught in the classroom," said Matthew Blair, Director of University Programs WSP. "We are pleased that students have found the courses to be helpful in their studies while also providing important preparation needed for interviews with prospective employers. We look forward to continuing to expand Wall Street Prep’s partnership with the LSU Finance Department.”

LSU students, alumni, and prospective employers have responded favorably to the WSP training and its impact on the practical and technical readiness of LSU students. “This type of training in the areas of financial statement modeling and valuation, as well as the foundational aspects of advanced training in Excel and Power Point, is the type of practical skill set development our students need to compete nationally for the most competitive internships and full-time positions in investment banking, commercial banking, equity research, and asset management. In the past, it was not always readily available within our curriculum, leaving LSU students at a disadvantage relative to some of their peers as they approached recruiting interviews and the job market," said Dr. Rajesh Narayanan, Chair of the LSU Finance Department. "Incorporating WSP training into our finance curriculum, along with practical
real world lab and case study applications, is an incredibly valuable and unique learning opportunity for our students that better prepares them for full-time and summer internship recruiting. It also prepares them to hit the ground running on day one as productive and technically proficient finance professionals once they graduate and start their careers."

“Having access to the WSP materials, along with the opportunity to apply the material within real world case study assignments in FIN 3910, was extremely interesting and quite helpful to my efforts at securing an investment banking summer analyst position in San Francisco," said Joel Moreau, LSU junior finance major. Camille Dunlap, a graduating finance major said, "There is no doubt the WSP materials were extremely helpful to my Excel skill development and critical to my understanding of how to construct a functional, three statement financial model from scratch. As a result of this training, I was able to clearly differentiate myself during a competitive recruiting process for a valuation and transaction advisory analyst position that I successfully secured after graduation.”
