Careers in Finance Series Attracts Students to Major

Students gathered to listen and ask questions to a panel of finance industry professionals.

BATON ROUGE - On October 18, 2018 the Department of Finance invited all business majors to attend a Careers in Finance: Asset Management presentation. It the first in a series of presentations on careers in finance.

Kurtay Ogunc, the undergraduate advisor in finance, moderated the panel of four experts from three major institutional investors located in Baton Rouge. The panel included representatives from a pension fund, a university endowment and an insurance company. 

John Hawie, CFA, SVP and Chief Strategy and Investment Officer at LWCC; Maurice J. Coleman '86, CFA, Deputy Chief Investment Officer at Teachers' Retirement System of Louisiana; Alex McDermott, Director of Investments at the LSU Foundation; and Meagan Shields '08, '11, Investment Portfolio Manager and Enterprise Risk Specialist at LWCC made up the panel.

The panel discussed various topics as it pertains to institutional fund management; asset allocation practices, the use of consultants, manager selection and risk management. In addition they explored various career opportunities in the asset management business.
