Public Administration Graduate Organizes Panel on Future of Transgender and Non-Binary People

BATON ROUGE – Peter Jenkins, a graduate of the LSU E. J. Ourso College of Business and current PhD candidate at the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University, organized and moderated a forum titled “The Future of Transgender and Non-Binary People.”

Held March 28 in Richmond, Va., the public forum featured a panel discussion that examined how government policies — including immigration, military readiness, health care and criminal justice — affect transgender and non-binary individuals.

“As a public policy student I’ve noticed that the academic literature is lacking on how policies affect transgender and non-binary people,” said Jenkins, who earned a master of public administration from LSU in 2015. “Because of this void, I wanted to start a discussion on a variety of topics and how our approach to policy can be improved.”

Panelists included Liz Coston, a faculty member in VCU’s College of Humanities & Sciences; Zakia McKensey, a certified HIV test counselor, prevention educator, advocate and founder of Nationz Foundation; Austin Higgs, special assistant to the president of the Richmond Memorial Health Foundation and Shabab Ahmed Mirza, research assistant for the LGBT Research and Communications Project at the Center for American Progress.

Nearly 200 students and community members were in attendance. The event also drew the attention of regional media.
