BATON ROUGE – LSU Campus Sustainability, LSU Dining and student government recently launched a program that will divert food waste from local landfills by providing produce and bakery items to local farmers who will use the scraps as animal feed.

“For two years we worked on this solution,” said Sarah Temple, manager of LSU Campus Sustainability and a master of public administration student. “We've always wanted to find a way to either compost food, or divert food from the landfill because it’s such a waste stream for LSU."

Temple credited student government for taking an active role in these efforts. “I’m so proud of the students at LSU.”

LSU Sustainability hopes that the new project will divert about 30 tons of waste annually. Currently, the university brings about 150 tons of waste to the East Baton Rouge North Landfill each year. LSU has set a goal of diverting 75 percent of all waste from the landfill by 2025.

“This program is a major benefit for LSU and the Baton Rogue community,” said Jared Llorens, director of the LSU Public Administration Institute. “Sarah demonstrated outstanding leadership throughout this process. Our faculty and students are proud of her efforts and are thankful for her passion and persistence. We all benefit from a more sustainable university.”
